Requests for Funds: LARGEST EVER! Nov 18th, 2009

The ninth round of Community Grants administered by The Banff Community Foundation has generated more requests than ever. The Advisory Committee has made its recommendations to the Board of Directors and final decisions will be announced in December.

“This year, groups are asking for over $160,000. of project support.” Executive Director, Lorraine Widmer-Carson says. “It is the biggest ask we have ever received.” Programs for toddlers, youth, the chronically ill and seniors, projects that promote environmental stewardship, address the dark sides of domestic violence or sexual abuse, new opportunities for volunteers or offer recreational opportunities for those who are at risk, are some of the applications that the volunteer advisory committee will review.

With a priority on ‘Elders’ and ‘Environment’ this year, all proposals will be screened to determine if they meet the Foundation’s granting goals, address community need and support community values. From programs that offer a nutritious meal or a warm bed for a night; from trail stewardship to inspiring musical creativity, the Foundation offers vital financial support for the local philanthropic sector.

The Community Grants program promotes a vision of Banff as a kind and caring community, a safe place to live, work and play, a place to showcase our national park brand of environmental stewardship. “It’s about thanks giving and giving thanks.” Widmer-Carson adds. “Giving back to the community renews our sense of optimism and offers important support to our neighbours, our staff, their children, and our home. I think the Foundation helps to build Banff National Park’s best competitive advantage – people helping. We are, after all, a service community and the Foundation is all about community service.”

The Foundation’s Community Grants program demonstrates community philanthropy and leadership. Revenue is earned through donations, by applying to other funding agencies, and from investment income. Since 2004, the Foundation has allocated close to $500,000. to local charitable projects.
